While on a hike at Piedras Marcadas Canyon our son spotted a bird petroglyph. I mentioned to him that it reminded me of the playful macaws that would come up to our house in Caracas, Venezuela.
The petroglyphs in Albuquerque date back to 1300 AD and they hold deep spiritual significance to Native Americans. Macaws provide a powerful link between South America and the American Southwest as ancient trade routes brought the birds into communities living in the New Mexico region as early 320 AD. There is evidence of a large Macaw aviary in Pueblo Bonito at Chaco Canyon around 1000 AD. The colorful bird feathers were prized items. The birds were well cared for and deeply respected as ambassadors to the underworld and bringers of rain.
The symbolic connection between distant homes is personally meaningful for us and we hope you will find the inspiration meaningful to you.
